Río Ancoa, Linares

El Peñasco is the most prominent rock in the valley of Río Ancoa. There are several other small crags along the river. Higher up, behind the marvellous Hotel El Melado, are even more rocks, probably volcanic and high more than 100m. Nothing has been done so far in these faces.

  • Location: valley of Río Ancoa, east of Linares
  • Access: by car until El Peñasco, then by 4WD until Hotel El Melado, public transport until last large bridge, ca. 1h before El Peñasco.
  • Rock: Granite (Peñasco), other stuff volcanic
  • Routes: some "water" boulders on the rocks along the river
  • Grades: about 6a-6c
  • Characteristics: mixed swimming-climbing
  • Height: Peñasco ca. 250m
  • Season: All except winter
  • Maps: JLM09, Maule

In the Adventure Handbook Central Chile trekkings are discribed in this region, highly recommended because completely unknown.

One of 3 fine boulders above the public pool (5.10c). Problem: to get dry hands before.

Río Ancoa: also good for rafting and cayaking
