LAS CHILCAS
Las Chilcas is the main sport climbing area near Santiago, close to the
highway and with short access. There are numerous routes in all grades with a
good protection. Many more routes can be opened. The rock is a conglomerate, in
some parts somewhat loose, but after many ascents the routes become firm and
solid. If you are used to alpine-like limestone, its quality may not seem so
favourable to you. A local guidebook describes the routes, which is sold in the
climbing stores in Santiago. Camping is possible in the place, but be aware of
thieves and "vinchucas", a blood-sucking insect that transmits a
serious desease, called "mal de chagas". There is a free camp site, but be careful with insects and theft.
